Nyang’ori High School were on Sunday 2nd February crowned 2020 Kisumu Open Handball champions after staging an incredible comeback and edging out hosts Kisumu Boys by a solitary goal in the final.
Kisumu Boys had led 8-4 at the break and Nyang’ori, playing a superb defense, ensured the hosts only managed a single goal in the second half while they themselves slowly clawed back into the tie to eventually win 10-9 a goal scored by center-back Ephraim Mulari.
This year’s handball edition of Kisumu Open was played at Lion High School- the very venue in which Barding High School won it last year but with the defending champions absent, 25 Boys schools showed up to contest for the title.
The road to the final had seen Nyang’ori top Pool C after wining all their matches. They had dispatched Oren High School 15-01, Maranda School 11-08, Dr Aloo Gumbi 11-06 and Kisumu Boys 12-06 in the group.
Quarter-final pairings had Kisumu Boys taking on Ober Boys and winning 10-08 while Nyang’ori edged St Mary’s Yala 09-05.
The stage was now set for the semi-finals and favorites Got Agulu had Nyang’ori between them and the final. Tied at a 06-06 during half time, Nyang’ori would overcome the Siaya county giants and win 12-10 making it to the final.
The second semi-final had Kisumu Boys squaring it out with Chesamisi High School who had taken down St Stephen’s Menara in the quarter-finals. The hosts made light weight of the Bungoma school to set a final date with Nyan’gori.
The final clash was a fairly balanced affair with the Vihiga County side having to overcome the hosts’ immense home support to narrowly edge Kisumu Boys 10-09.
In the girls’ category, Namasoli were 10-6 winners over Masogo to lift the crown. They had earlier on dispatched Ayweyo 8-5 while Masogo had claimed a 7-2 win over Dr. Aloo Gumbi.
