Victoria Handball: Kisumu Academy returns to the summit as Kisumu Saints, Kisumu Poly surge for a maiden title

Defending champions of the Victoria Handball Super League (VHSL)- Kisumu Academy Handball Club returned to the summit of the VHSL log after another clean weekend in matches played at Kanyamedha Primary School grounds on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th.

Academy dispatched Sigalagala Polytechnic by 26 goals to 16 but were put to the sword by their junior team- Kisumu Academy Junior (KAJ), leaving it late to win 40-29 against the resilient youngsters.

In other matches played on Sunday, Sigalagala went down against Kanyamedha Secondary by 23-22 but had registered their first win of the season earlier on against KAJ; a 20-14 victory.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Saints HC will head into the final round of the first leg matches with 4 games in hand and needing only four points to dislodge Academy from the summit. Saints, who had done themselves justice in their first round of fixtures last week- dispatching Academy 29-25 and also going over Kisumu Polytechnic 22-19, have some dicey fixtures coming up in the way of Iraha Boys from South Nyanza and Gladiators from Siaya.

Maseno University’s Siriba Campus will play host to the final lap of these first leg matches according to Mr Robert Ojwang- the VHSL director.

”We are looking at a break after next round’s matches because many schools and institutions will also be just about to wrap things up. So far, we are right on track with the fixtures and I am confident this season is going to be more successful than the previous ones,” Ojwang tells Sports Review Kisumu.

VHSL is in its fourth season and during its third, presented two teams; Kisumu Academy and Kisumu Saints for the annual nationwide Super Cup. Both teams reached the semi-finals of the Super Cup whose fate is yet to be decided up to date.

The final leg of first round’s matches will be played this weekend at the Maseno University.
